Ford F-150 SVT Raptor proves popular (U.S)

The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor with the optional 6.2 litre V8 is shifting like there’s no tomorrow, with 3,000 orders already booked for the $41,995 pick-up.


The V8, taken from those used in Ford's Super Duties, has a unique cam profile to help get extra power for the Raptor. The final result is 411bhp and 434 lb-ft of torque.

SVT chief functional engineer, Kerry Baldori explains, "We spent a lot of time developing our desert durability test so that it's very close to replicating the Baja 1000. Desert testing proved to be a very quick way to learn about the reliability of the truck and it put another level of extreme loads on the engine that our normal durability testing doesn't cover."

Ford is likely to see orders inflating once the SuperCrew arrives in 2011.


2011 Chevrolet Volt requires premium fuel (U.S)

General Motors have said that the 1.4 litre petrol engine in the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will require premium fuel.

The Volt hybrid uses an 111kW electric motor as its primary driving force. When the lithium-ion battery pack is used up after 40 miles (65km), the 80bhp petrol engine comes to life to recharge the motor and battery pack, extending the vehicle's range to 300 (547km) miles plus. Combined engine and electric power comes to 150bhp and 370Nm (273lb-ft) of torque.

Chevy’s 2011 Online Order/Reference Guide for dealers, an entry under the reference code LUU states: "Engine, Range Extender, 1.4L Internal Combustion Engine (estimated: 80bhp [60 kW]), requires premium fuel."

A GM spokesman Adam Denison confirmed: "The Volt's unique architecture causes the onboard engine to act more like a generator. As such, premium fuel is required to maximise fuel efficiency. The use of premium fuel in the Volt increases fuel efficiency by 5 percent or greater over the use of regular fuel. Simply put, premium fuel optimizes this engine's characteristics. Basically, with reduced fuel consumption a key objective, premium fuel is the right solution for the Volt."

Although fuel economy is yet to be announced, GM stresses that the Volt can return 230mpg combined on the U.S cycle. That translates to around 1l/100km.

The 2011 Volt receives an 8 year, 100,000 (160,000km) mile battery warranty. Prices start at $41,000, $33,500 after the $7,500 tax credit. If you fancy leasing, put down a $2,500 security deposit and you can lease the all-new Volt for $350/mth for 36 months. The first 4,400 owners will get a 120v charging cord and a 240v charging station with home installation. A 5 year OnStar 'Directions and Connections' service (which includes Automatic Crash Response, stolen vehicle assistance and connected navigation), 8 airbags (x2 front, side, curtain and knee), ESP w/ traction control will come as standard. On the warranty front, a 3 year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5 year/100,000 mile road assistance, courtesy transportation and petrol engine warranty, 6 year/100,000 mile corrosion protection coverage, and an 8 year/100,000 mile battery warranty will be available.

Currently available for pre-order at select dealerships (in California, New York, Michigan, Connecticut, Texas, New Jersey and Washington D.C), the first Volts will be delivered late this year. Toyota extends warranty (UK)

Starting from today, Toyota UK will be extending their standard warranty from 3 years to 5 years. The longer deal was introduced back in March as Toyota tried to redirect negative publicity over its vehicle recalls. Buyers could choose between 3 years free servicing or a 5 year warranty.

"Our new five-year warranty is tangible evidence of our commitment to quality and to our customers – both those who are loyal to the brand, and those who are considering switching to Toyota for their next car," said Miguel Fonseca, Toyota GB managing director.

"By taking this major initiative we are giving our customers complete peace of mind. We want to reassure them that, in choosing a Toyota, they are getting the best in quality, reliability and durability."

The 5 year warranty is designed to rival those offered by South Korean rivals Hyundai (5 years) and Kia (7 years). However, Toyota's deal has a 100,000 mile limit, whereas the Korean brands' have no stated mileages.

Toyota says that the new warranty is mainly targeted at buyers who might not have considered the firm's cars before, and buyers who might have been put off by the various recalls over the past few months.

There are no plans to extend the warranty on cars from Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division.

Nissan to reintroduce 200SX

Nissan is looking to revitalise the 200SX sports coupé that will take on the Mazda RX-7 and VW Scirocco, insiders say.

The 200SX coupé replacement would slot beneath the 370Z sports car to give Nissan a more affordable, fuel-efficient fastback as oppose to the VW Scirocco and the Renault Mégane 3dr.


The coupé would be rear-wheel drive, but the problem of finding a suitable platform on which to build it is tricky. A shortened 370Z chassis has been considered at one point but it was too heavy. The convertible rear-drive sports car that Nissan was exploring at one time, which could also have provided the hardware has been abandoned.

Nissan is making use of the next generation of its Tiida compact family car — sold in Slovenia, Germany, Ireland, Austria, Poland, Russia, Greece, Switzland and Ukraine — to strengthen its family car line-up alongside the Qashqai. The Qashqai crossover has been a colossal success, but the car maker still wants a regular small family car to replace the Almera, so it can take on the VW Golf, Vauxhall/Opel Astra, Kia Cee’d/Hyundai i30 and Ford Focus across Europe.

Apesar de não ter gostado muito do design do novo modelo do uno, não tenha nada a criticar sobre o consumo do carro. Isso porque, tenho alguns colegas que adquiriram o carro e me falaram que, tanto o modelo antigo quanto o novo estão consumindo praticamente a mesma coisa.

Vale Ressaltar que, como eu destaquei "praticamente" ele não é igual o milagroso uno mile. Segundo relato de alguns proprietários do modelo antigo basta passar com o carro perto de um posto de gasolina que o mesmo anda, ou seja nem precisava abastecer de verdade rsrsrsr.

Mas sem delonga vamos voltar a falar do novo uno e seu desempenho nas pistas.

Desempenho: O motor flex de 88 cv com álcool deixa a desejar em baixa rotação, mas sua retomada chega a ser interessante, realmente o carro faz o que promete, ele é voltado para a cidade.

Console: Os botões são bem distribuídos e fáceis de manusear, o que falta é abertura de janelas nas portas. Como já foi dito o cambio mais elevado também é um ponto positivo pra ele.

Conforto (6) : Para um popular, possui bancos confortáveis, mas a posição para dirigi-lo deixa a desejar assim como o elevado valor pela aquisição do ar condicionado.

Estabilidade : Mesmo andando dentro da cidade já é perceptível que o vento é um vilão, mas sua suspensão se comporta muito bem durante frenagens, não deixando que o carro incline demais.

Acabamento: Muito bom para um carro popular, o plástico texturizado do painel e o estofado dos bancos foram muito bem escolhidos, apenas os botões do console aparentam ser frágeis.

Visual (8) : O interior está realmente muito chamativo, mas por fora seu visual apesar de moderno não é muito harmônico. Contando também a ausência de rodas de liga leve.

Consumo: Apesar de continuar gastando pouco seu modelo antigo era com certeza mais econômico, hoje mantém a marca dos melhores em consumo, mas perdeu seu 1º lugar.

Custo / Benefício : Caso queira pegar um carro "pelado" (sem acessórios), continua sendo um ótima opção, mas conforme colocamos os opcionais o preço do modelo sobe muito, ao ponto de comprar carros de melhor qualidade com vários dos itens vindos de série.

Electric cars need steel bodies

The next generation of electric cars will need specifically designed steel bodies to exploit their green potential, according to the world’s biggest steel makers.

A new research project, the Future Steel Vehicle (FSV), is testing redesigned structural parts in an electric car’s bodywork, including the sills, front crash structure, roof and battery carrier, to cut weight and save energy.

Engineers are also weighing up a variety of steels to balance their strength in an EV body against the energy used in its manufacture. This will reduce the whole-life energy costs of an EV.

Previous steel industry projects have advanced the design of lightweight steel car bodies, doors and suspensions.

Toyota to revise design language

Future Toyota vehicles will get a new grille and ‘family face’, as part of company boss Akio Toyoda’s aim to give his cars more emotional appeal. Even though the front-end look is still being decided, Toyota Europe boss Didier Leroy says it will be regular and more recognisable than the current line-up.

Smaller cars will be made to look bigger, rather than vice versa, yet, there will still be differences between ranges to differentiate them, with product groups such as SUVs and sports models obtaining their own look.

Alfa Romeo introduces all-new twin-clutch gearbox

Alfa Romeo will launch a new twin-clutch TCT auto gearbox in the MiTo this year and the Giulietta in Spring 2011.

The 6 speed design, developed internally by Fiat, employs dry clutches and has a torque capacity of 254Nm (188lb/ft), just enough to cope with the Giulietta Cloverleaf's 239Nm (177lb/ft) 1.7 litre turbo on Overboost.


To begin with, it will only be fitted to the 135bhp 1.4 litre Mito and the 170bhp 1.4 litre petrol and 2.0 diesel Giuliettas.
 

2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid


The long-awaited 2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid has been on the auto show circuit for almost 12 months now, but the green luxury cruiser is finally ready for sale. Arriving in showrooms this fall with a pricetag of $87,950, the S400 Hybrid promises a 21 % improvement in fuel economy over the base S350 model sold overseas and is the cheapest S-Class in the automaker’s American lineup.


By combining a 275 horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine and a 20 horsepower electric motor, the S400 Hybrid is what most would call a 'mild' hybrid. That's enough to get an EPA-rated fuel economy of 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. That compares to 14 mpg/21 mpg city/highway fuel economy for the S550, the next model in the S-Class lineup.


The lithium-ion batteries contribute enough energy to push the car's model number up from its natural displacement of 3.5-liter (as in the S350) to the equivalent of a 4.0-liter engine. Equipped with the 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic transmission with special adjustments for the hybrid model, the car is also capable of completing the 0-62 mph dash in 7.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 156 mph.


Lithium-ion chemistries are capable of storing about twice as much energy per pound as the nickel-metal-hydride packs used in all other hybrids, including the 2010 Toyota Prius that pretty much defines "hybrid" for Americans.


Fuel efficiency gains are made through a combination of technologies, including stop-start functionality, which helps to cut fuel use while standing still at traffic lights or jams. But improved efficiency isn't the only effect the hybrid system has--it can also boost performance for brief periods. By kicking in the electric motor's full 118 pound-feet of torque as the fuel-intensive acceleration phase kicks in, it speeds take-off while minimizing fuel use. Regenerative braking helps to maximize efficiency and recapture energy that would otherwise be lost. All of the operation of the hybrid system is displayed for the driver's convenience in a single display in the instrument cluster.


Minus chrome letters on the trunk saying "HYBRID", you would never know this full-size S-Class sedan contained all the electric parts. Whether or not this will be a winning strategy for Mercedes remains to be seen but it is one that arch rival BMW is copying for its own 2010 ActiveHybrid 7 based on the 7-Series sedan.

Volkswagen L1 Concept


The L1 name refers to the European concept of a "1-Liter" car, meaning one so efficient it uses no more than 1.0 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. If you're not particularly metric, that translates to 235 miles per gallon.

VW didn't quite make its mark; the L1 actually uses 1.38 L/100 km, meaning its gas mileage is "only" 170 miles per gallon.



The rear-mounted engine, a 0.8-liter two-cylinder turbocharged diesel, is essentially half of VW's current 1.6-liter TDI turbodiesel engine. It puts out 27 horsepower in Eco mode, which rises to 39 hp in Sport mode, and drives through a 7-speed direct-shift gearbox (DSG) paired with a 14-hp hybrid electric system that switches off the engine as the car comes to a stop.

fabricante de automóveis Ford acaba de lançar os primeiros detalhes e imagens do novo Ford Focus ST 2012, que será o desempenho da versão a próxima geração do Ford Focus. Este novo modelo deverá estrear em 2010 de Paris Auto Show, no final deste mês, juntamente com o resto da família Focus.


Mesmo que este portal quente está sendo revelado este ano não estarão disponíveis até 2012, mas a versão regular chegará showrooms no próximo ano.

O Ford Focus ST 2012 é alimentado por um novo 2.0-litro de quatro cilindros Ford, o motor EcoBoost, que desenvolve 250hp.

O fabricante diz que o novo Ford Focus ST 2012 irá oferecer um desempenho hilariante e tratamento, juntamente com um som viciante. A empresa também menciona que o novo Ford Focus ST 2012 é o seu primeiro modelo a ser desenvolvido no âmbito da nova estratégia global Performance Veículos.

Quanto ao design do Ford Focus ST 2012 vai, vai ter um novo pára-choques dianteiro com grelha de grandes dimensões, novas saias laterais e um spoiler traseiro teto.

O interior do Focus ST 2012 também foi redesenhado e agora traz bancos desportivo e que parece ser de fibra de carbono insere no painel.
